Kobe IX EM Philippines
Basketball is the number one love of the Philippines. It was an honor and huge opportunity for my to create a shoe that commemorated a culture near and dear to me, one that reflected my own love for the great game.
Inspired by the handpainted signs of the Barangay (neighborhood) courts, macro numbers and letters blocked the back half of the shoes.
An "anytime, anywhere" mentality can be reflected in the "tsinelas" or sandal detail printed on the outsole. Filipinos love the game so much, they'll even play in flip-flops if they don't have the shoes to play on their local courts.
A print was designed to emulate traditional woven mats called "banigs" that have beautiful intricate patterns. The print color-blocked the shoe in a new way.
Accents of chrome silver appear in the branding of the shoe as a nod to the high-polish chrome that adorn the iconic jeepney vehicles of the Philippines.
